OpenAI will make its frontier artificial intelligence models and Codex coding agent available through Google Cloud in the coming weeks, the companies said Wednesday, deepening ties between two rivals and underscoring how the major cloud providers are becoming the key distributors of top AI models.

The partnership will bring OpenAI’s latest models, such as GPT-6 Astra, to Google Cloud’s Model Garden. Customers will be able to buy them through Google Cloud Marketplace and use their existing cloud spending commitments for the purchases, a direct play for enterprise buyers who have been waiting for a procurement-friendly way in.

The end of exclusivity

The deal adds another layer to an increasingly complex relationship. OpenAI’s exclusive distribution arrangement with Microsoft expired in April, and the company has since expanded to Amazon Web Services and now to Google Cloud, each a hyperscaler vying for AI market share. Google is the latest to offer OpenAI’s models to its own customers.

The logic is economic. Building and deploying large models is so expensive that even direct competitors must cooperate, and the financing scramble is visible everywhere: Anthropic offers Blackstone 10%+ returns to finance a $60 billion AI chip deal, while Anthropic commits 5 percent of shares to a new public benefit fund. The cloud providers sit at the center of all of it.

Google’s neutral play

For Google Cloud, adding OpenAI’s models strengthens a strategy of offering customers a wider range of third-party models rather than relying only on its own. The approach follows the cloud deal Google struck with OpenAI last year for more computing capacity, and it positions Google as the neutral shelf in a market where every hyperscaler wants to be the store.

Regulated industries get particular attention: access through Google Cloud’s access controls, data governance tools and infrastructure for so-called agentic AI workflows. Reuters’ Krystal Hu reports the move is part of OpenAI’s push to sell its models to more enterprise customers. The compute wars are becoming distribution wars, and the storefronts are the clouds.
