Two of the AI industry’s most important players are now armed with staggering warchests: OpenAI is reportedly raising up to 30 billion dollars at a 1.25 trillion dollar valuation, while China’s DeepSeek is raising around 15 billion dollars from Tencent and CATL. The parallel raises, days apart, frame the AI race as what it has become: a contest of capital as much as of code.

The numbers are historic by any measure. A 30 billion dollar private round would rank among the largest ever. A 15 billion dollar raise for a Chinese lab, in the face of US sanctions and a DHS ban from federal systems, shows how little geopolitics has dented investor appetite for AI exposure.

Two tracks, one race

The warchests reflect two different strategies. OpenAI is building the maximalist path: the biggest models, the biggest clusters, the biggest partnerships, funded by American and Gulf capital. DeepSeek represents the efficiency path: competitive models built with fewer resources, now scaling up with Chinese industrial backing. The market is funding both theories at once.

The DHS order against DeepSeek, coming days before its raise, is a reminder that the two tracks operate under different rules. American labs face market discipline; Chinese labs face geopolitical discipline. Both face the same underlying question: when does the spending turn into sustainable returns?

The capital cycle

AI funding has moved through distinct phases: venture seed rounds, then mega-rounds, now quasi-sovereign financings. Each phase has raised the bar for the next. The earlier tech coverage in our previous reporting tracked this evolution, with more on where the money is going. GenZNewz’s report has the DeepSeek details.

For investors, the parallel raises offer a natural experiment. Two labs, two philosophies, two capital bases, all chasing the same prize. The next two years will reveal which theory of AI progress was right, or whether, as often happens, the truth turns out to be a synthesis nobody predicted.
