LYNN — Public service members from Swampscott, Lynn, and Peabody lined up outside of Solimine Funeral Home on Thursday afternoon, awaiting the funeral procession of Swampscott Police Officer Thomas Lucas.

Lucas died on Thursday, Feb. 29 at the age of 48 after a battle with throat cancer. He served with the Swampscott Police Department for more than 20 years.

The procession rode through the streets of both Swampscott and Lynn before arriving at the funeral home. Lucas was honored with a rendition of “Going Home” performed on the bagpipes as his peers stood in solidarity.

Lucas’ two sons, Kyle, 19, and Dylan, 14, served as pallbearers. The wake began at 4 p.m. and the funeral service was held at 7 p.m.

“I want to personally thank our community for the overwhelming outpouring of support during this difficult time for our department,” Swampscott Police Chief Ruben Quesada said in a statement.
