ROUNDUP: Saugus, Peabody girls clinch tournament spots

In girls basketball action on Friday, Peabody (10-4) topped Gloucester, 67-37, at home to clinch its spot in the MIAA Division 1 state tournament. Do-it-all Logan Lomasney scored 23 points and tracked down 10 rebounds.

Sophia Coburn added 16 points to go with eight boards, while Abby Bettencourt (9 points, 11 rebounds, 9 assists, 6 steals) did a little bit of everything in the win.

Aliana Ryan netted nine more points, and according to coach Stan McKeen, Avery Bettencourt and Olivia Gaynor also came to play for the Tanners.

Saugus (10-3) just about doubled up Salem, 63-32, en route to its 10th win of the season and a state tournament berth in Division 3. 

On the road, Syd Deledi (4 points) scored her first varsity points and Shawn Sewell netted her first varsity basket.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Georgetown 49 

Lynn Classical 37

In a “well-played game by both sides,” according to Classical coach Tom Sawyer, his Lady Rams suffered a home loss against Georgetown, 49-37, on Friday.

Tight until the tailend of the fourth quarter, Lauren Wilson led Classical (11-3) with 12 points. She was followed by Divine Egbuta (8) and Linda Jallow (6).

Lynn Tech 57

Notre Dame (Hingham) 25

This one was never in doubt. Lynn Tech upped its record to 9-6 in a “great all-around team win,” as said by coach Kaitlyn Wechsler. Aliyah Volquez had 25 points, five steals, four rebounds, and a block.

Other Tigers who came to play were Engelyz Bingham (9 points, 4 rebounds, 5 steals, 5 assists), Allison Morales (7 points, 4 steals, 2 assists), Camila Rufino Santos (6 points, 3 steals, 2 rebounds), and Niya Bingham (6 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals).

St. Mary’s 69

Archbishop Williams 40

In its quest for yet another state championship, St. Mary’s completed another piece of the puzzle with a home win against Archbishop Williams. The Spartans improve to 15-4 on the season.

Bella Owumi (game-high 19 points), AJ Hyacinthe (13), Lily Norton (11), and Reese Matela (10) all played well for the hosts on Senior Night.

Bishop Fenwick 79

Bishop Stang 19

Ahead of its powerhouse showdown against unbeaten Wachusett on Sunday (3:30 p.m.), Fenwick cruised by Stang in 60-point fashion.

The visiting Crusaders (12-2) were led by Cecilia Kay (20 points), Anna Fertonani (9 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists), and Caitlin Boyle (14 points).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Swampscott 66

Beverly 46

Thanks to a career high from sophomore Connor Chiarello (30 points), his Swampscott Big Blue defeated Beverly with ease at home.

“It’s been many years (15) since a boys Swampscott team has beaten a Beverly team,” said Swampscott coach Jason Knowles. “This was a total team effort on both ends of the court.”

Liam Wales and Nakeylan Davis scored 11 apiece for the Big Blue, who now stand at 9-6.

Archbishop Williams 65

St. Mary’s 58

Archbishop Williams took advantage of its home court and defeated St. Mary’s, 65-58, Friday night. JJ Martinez (18 points) and Jake Fortier (14) played well for the Spartans.

Bishop Stang 57

Bishop Fenwick 49

A loss, but not without positives as several Crusaders came to play on home hardwood. Jimmy Vahey led the charge with 15 points, followed by James Meklis (13 points, 5 assists), Dom Paniello Torres (10 points, 8 rebounds), and Brady Jenkins (9 points).

Peabody 67 

Gloucester 42

Raphel Laurent of the Tanners did it again, recording 21 points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals to lead Peabody (14-2) to a dominant win against host Gloucester.

He was followed by John Lucas (15 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals), Cam Connolly (8 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists), Jariel Tolentino (8 points, 4 assists, 3 steals) and Jim Festa, the latter of whom played a strong game according to coach Thad Broughton.

Salem 77

Saugus 41

Despite Danny Shea (12 points), Isaiah Rodriguez (11), and Nathan Soroko (7) doing their things on the scoreboard, Saugus had no answer for the Witches at home.

“A strong start, but it got away from us,” said Saugus coach Joe Bertrand.
