An underdog on paper, but don’t tell that to Lynn Tech’s girls basketball team.

In a road matchup against No. 32 Upper Cape Cod RVT on Wednesday, the No. 33 Tigers returned to Lynn with a 67-52 victory in an MIAA Division 4 preliminary.

Engelyz Bingham led the charge with 26 points, nine rebounds, six steals, and five assists, while partner-in-crime Allison Morales had 21 points, 11 rebounds, three steals, and two blocks.

Other contributing Tigers were Aliyah Volquez (13 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists) and Camila Rufino Santos (6 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals), while “Isabella Walcott played great defense,” according to coach Kaitlyn Wechsler.

Tech visits No. 1 Cathedral this Friday at 6:30 p.m.

BOYS HOCKEY

Lynnfield 4

Norton 3

This one was as close as it gets. Tim Sullivan (from Aidan Norton) scored in sudden death for the No. 4 Lynnfield Pioneers in their opening round matchup against No. 29 Norton in Division 3 action.

Lynnfield’s Joe Raffa scored the first two goals of the game, but never-say-die Norton scored three unanswered goals in the third period.

Talk about good timing. Nick Kelter potted his first varsity goal to tie the game late.

St. John’s Prep 6

Lincoln-Sudbury 2

The top-seeded Eagles tripled up No. 32 Lincoln-Sudbury at Essex Sports Center in Middleton, punching their ticket to the Division 1 Sweet 16 against No. 16 Wellesley.

Christian Rosa went home with a hat trick, while Johnny Tighe tucked two goals for The Prep, which returns to home ice this Saturday.

Winthrop 9

Tri-County 2

The Vikings are ranked No. 1 for a reason. In a Wednesday evening showdown at Larsen Rink, Winthrop got the job done against No. 32 Tri-County (Franklin), 9-2.

Petey Silverman (3 goals, 3 assists) led the offensive barrage, while Mikey Holgersen, Philly Boncore (2), Joey Rich, Glen Calla, and Luke Githinji also scored. Billy Hayes dished out two helpers.

Marblehead 7

Foxborough 2

On to the next one. In a Division 3 meeting at Salem State, No. 6 Marblehead skated past No. 27 Foxborough in a 7-2 final. The Headers, 13-9-1, advanced to the Sweet 16 against No. 11 Methuen.

Dedham 4

Swampscott 0

A solid season for the No. 21 Big Blue, who finished with an 8-9-3 record, but the road came to an end on Wednesday in a 4-0 loss to No. 12 Dedham.

Four players scored for the versatile Marauders, who advanced to the Division 4 Sweet 16.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Marblehead 67

Melrose 64

In another Wednesday night upset, the No. 34 Magicians had the magic in their three-point win against No. 31 Melrose in overtime.

Marblehead’s Ryan Commoss tied the game, 56-56, with less than a minute to go in regulation after Nick Lemmond hit a big 3-pointer with 2:46 remaining.

Melrose’s John Arens hit a late 3-pointer to make it a one-possession game in overtime, 64-61, but to no avail.

Marblehead – who led after the first three quarters on Wednesday – visits No. 2 Leominster in the Division 2 Round of 32.
