Crafting is a great way to spend your free time. You get to express yourself and create something new. One way that avid crafters are taking their hobby to the next level is by making home goods. Making home goods such as candles is a new endeavor for many crafters, but the process is surprisingly easy and rewarding. And you only need a few simple ingredients to get started! We explain what you need to make your candles below.

Soy Wax

All candles are made of wax. While there are other candle waxes on the market, such as paraffin wax and gel wax, soy wax is the best choice. Soy wax provides a cleaner burn than paraffin wax and holds a scent better than gel wax. It’s also more environmentally friendly and safe for any pets in your household. For the first step of the candle-making process, melt the wax down on the stove so that you can monitor its temperature.

Fragrance Oils

You can make an unscented soy candle if you want; it will still look great in your home, even if it doesn’t provide a scent. However, most people prefer scented candles. You can safely add scents to homemade candles; all you need is a fragrance oil that’s safe to burn. You can find fragrance oils specifically designed for candle making and pour some into your melted wax, mixing until it’s fully combined.

Non-Toxic Colorants

Your candle doesn’t need color to look or smell great, but many people like to add color to their candles anyway. You can add liquid candle dyes, or you can choose another non-toxic color option, such as mica powder. As long as the colorant is non-toxic and you mix it into the wax well, the color should dispense evenly, and the candle should burn well. If the colorant and wax aren’t well combined, pockets of the colorant could burst into flame while burning the candle.

Fun Additions

Your candle doesn’t necessarily need fun additions such as dried florals or glitter, but many people like to add them. They’re simple to add to your candle as well. You can drop them into the melted wax before you pour the wax or place the additions directly into the candle containers. If you want the additions to sit at the bottom of the candle, drop them in before pouring the wax. If you want them at the top, drop them in at the end. Just remember that there are some things you should never use for making candles, such as plastic beads or plastic-based glitter since they can melt.

These four simple ingredients allow you to make your own candles at home and customize them however you please. Choose a heat-safe container and a slow-burning wick to finish your homemade candle-making process and enjoy your finished product.
