LYNN — More than 1,000 families received Thanksgiving meals on Saturday.

The Lynn Housing Authority & Neighborhood Development (LHAND) partnered with the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley to provide Thanksgiving meals.

“We are so fortunate to have the United Way, an active presence in our community, and the dedicated staff from LHAND providing support for this project,” LHAND Executive Director Charles J. Gaeta said.

The meal bags contained all the ingredients for a full Thanksgiving meal except for the turkey. For that, each bag included a $20 Market Basket gift card.

Gratitude Project volunteers handed out bags full of food Saturday morning at LHAND.

Lynn families of three or more members could register for the meal bags starting mid-October.

On Friday, 1,120 meal bags were delivered to the LHAND offices on Church Street.

Approximately 35 volunteers helped prepare the meal bags on Friday and handed them out on Saturday.

This year’s numbers are on par with previous years, with about 1,000 families being served each of the past two years.

LHAND is participating in the Gratitude Project, formerly known as the Thanksgiving Project, for the 15th time this year. The United Way started the initiative 25 years ago.
