Behind dynamic freshman Connor Chiarello’s 18 points, the host Big Blue played to their name in a 70-56 victory against Saugus in boys basketball action.

Nakeylan Davis (12 points), Liam Wales (10 points), and Adam Sparacio (11 points, 11 rebounds) all contributed in the win, but there were more.

“Quinn Fitzpatrick and Jake Collins gave us a spark off the bench, each scoring eight points and playing solid defense,” said Swampscott coach Jason Knowles, whose Swampscott team upped its record to 7-4.

For Saugus, it was led by Danny Shea (18 points), Isaiah Rodriguez (12), Huey Josama (12), and Ryan Shea (10).

“It was a true team effort and I’m proud of the way we played,” said coach Joe Bertrand of the Sachems.

BOYS BASKETBALL

St. Mary’s 59
Arlington Catholic 42

Only one boys basketball team remains undefeated in the Catholic Central League. Spoiler alert: it comes from Lynn.

In a road victory against Arlington Catholic, St. Mary’s took care of business, 59-42. Josiah Quintana was outstanding with 23 points, while Jake Fortier followed with 12.

Cathedral 75

James Meklis must love playing basketball on Friday nights, harkening back to his stellar performance against St. Mary’s last week.

In this one, the Lynn kid scored 28 points to go with 10 assists. Fenwick received some more help from Jimmy Vahey (22 points, 14 rebounds) and Jake Bellacini (9 points).

Lynn Tech 62
Whittier 30

Good teams take advantage of their home court – just look at Lynn Tech’s boys basketball team Friday night. Behind Jayden Welch (16 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists) and Giovanni Jean (16 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists), the Tigers doubled up Whittier with ease.

Triton 39

The Pioneers handled Cape Ann League opponent Triton on the road. More importantly, they upped their record to 7-3 on the season (6-2 in CAL). Leading the Lynnfield charge were Chris Daniels (16 points), Alex Fleming (14), and Harris Hadzihasanovic (11).

St. John’s Prep 34

St. John’s Prep had no answer for explosive Xaverian Friday night, which sported two players in double digits in Lorenzo Carrara (23 points) and JJ Honekamp (13).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Fenwick 44
Cathedral 40

We’re past the midway point of January, and Fenwick’s girls hoops team has still only lost one game (9-1).

In a close one at home, the Lady Crusaders defeated Cathedral, 44-40, behind Cecilia Kay’s 24 points and 11 rebounds. Caitlin Boyle had 10 points and four rebounds, while Celia Neilson and Bella Lopez-Marin combined for 11 assists.

“Tess Kennan, Kate McPhail, and Anna Fertonani played well defensively,” said Fenwick coach Adam DeBaggis.

Saugus 41
Swampscott 31

Thanks to Peyton DiBiasio (15 points), Ashleen Escobar (10), and Taylor Deleidi (9), the Sachems shot their way past Swampscott on home hardwood. Madi Femino and Madison Botta played well defensively for Saugus.

Masconomet 58
Peabody 54

It took an overtime period to knock off the Tanners of Peabody, but Masconomet did it.

In the four-point defeat, Peabody was led by Logan Lomasney with 19 points, 13 rebounds, and seven assists. Ally Bettencourt scored 15 to go with seven boards. Abby Bettencourt also played a strong game, per coach Stan McKeen.

BOYS HOCKEY

Swampscott 2
Northeast Metro 1

Quinn Hitchcock tickled twine to win Friday night’s game for Swampscott in overtime against Northeast Metro in enemy territory. Will Roddy scored the other Big Blue goal and dished out a helper, while Dom Pappalardo was more than reliable between the pipes.
