The deadline to submit applications for Nahant’s Community Preservation Act grants has been extended one additional week to Tuesday, Jan. 23.

The decision stems from the online version of the application becoming available to the community later than expected.

“It seemed like it was judicious to give some more time for people to use the online versus a PDF format,” Community Preservation Committee Chair Lynne Spencer said.

Spencer explained that she collaborated with the town office on Tuesday to make both town government and the community aware of the change.

The Commonwealth’s Community Preservation Act allows the Town of Nahant to invest in projects related to open space, historic preservation, affordable housing, and recreation. The town’s 3% property tax surcharge is matched annually with state funding to finance potential projects. The CPC will be the first to review all applications before going to the Financial Committee and, ultimately, Town Meeting in May.

Some of the criteria for application approval include feasibility, time sensitivity, cost, and demonstrated community support. Spencer and her peers on the CPC remain encouraging of any additional applicants from town entities and organizations and will take an “even-handed approach” when the time comes to review applications. Online applications can be completed at https://nahant.org/cpc-grant-application/.
