Both the Lynn Jets and St. Mary’s Spartans came across teams with a lot of firepower Wednesday night. The Jets faced Medford, which put 11 goals past them despite the brilliance of Nicholas DeNino, who recorded 49 saves. 

St. Mary’s had a tough night against Archbishop Williams, losing 7-4. The Bishops got out to a 4-0 lead early in the second period before the Spartans found their groove on offense. 

But it was too little, too late.

Senior captain Benjamin Fry scored to get the Spartans on the board. Then, freshman Chase Collins and sophomore Caleb Racki scored to make it 6-3 with three minutes remaining in the second period. 

Collins picked up another goal in the third period before the final whistle blew.

Fenwick struggled to get past Newburyport’s goalie in a tough 2-0 loss. The Crusaders will look to put the loss behind them and focus on Arlington Catholic in Saturday’s home game (6 p.m.).

SWIMMING AND DIVING

It was a great open to the season for the Crusaders (1-0) as they traveled to Brockton to take on the Cardinals. Not only did Fenwick win, but had seven first-place finishes out of a possible 11. 

Sophomore Caroline Blatchford racked up three first-place finishes. She finished first in the 200 free (2:09.39) and 100 backstroke (1:06.81). In addition to the individual events, Blatchford contributed to the winning 200 medley relay team as her, junior captain Hannah Ryan, freshman Amelia Gallant, and senior captain Madison Moseley took home gold with a time of 2:08.62. 

The same relay team competed and struck gold again – this time in the 400 freestyle relay (4:14.90). 

Gallant placed first in the 200 individual medley (2:26.51) and 500 freestyle (5:42.14). 

Ryan showed no one can keep up with her in the 100 breaststroke as she recorded a 1:17.38 time – good for first.

It was a back-and-forth Northeastern Conference battle between two good sides, but unfortunately for the Black and Blue, they didn’t have enough to get the team win. 

The Black and Blue are back in action Thursday when they travel to Pentucket for a 6:30 p.m. match. 

St. John’s Prep 44

Whittier Tech 20

The Eagles soared to 4-0 on the season, picking up a dominant win against Whittier Tech. 

It was Ryan Ofilos’ first official start for The Prep. Better yet, he took home a win in the 132-pound division. 

Other winning Eagles: Braedon Goes (120), Gregg Semorucci (126), Jimmy Lally (138), Will LaValle (144), Ryan DeSouza (150), Jayden D’Ambrosio (157), Vincent Bilotti (175), and Alex Bajoras (285). 

TRACK AND FIELD

The Lady Tanners picked up a win over Danvers (74-12), but narrowly missed out on a clean sweep as Masconomet just edged Peabody (47-39). 

They did well in the 2-mile event as Sofia Schirripa picked up first place, while Brooke Lomasney was right behind her in second with a 13:24.9. 

Alessandra Forgione performed well in the shot put, throwing a 31-11.0, which was good enough for second place. 

Other first-place Lady Tanners: Mimi Batista (300 meters, 44.4), Schirripa (2-mile, 13:23), 4×440 relay team (4:33.4). 

But it was a clean sweep for the Peabody boys on Wednesday. The Tanners dominated Masco (53.5-32.5) and Danvers (60-26) in most events, picking up a top-three finish in eight of the nine events. 

Alex Jackson and Daniel Davila took home first and second respectively in shot put with Jackson throwing a 51-5.25 and Davila a 40-2.75. 

In the high jump, Declan Smith cleared 5-8 which was good enough for second place.
