LYNNFIELD — Lynnfield Middle School students from Bus E were honored with the Young Hero Award in recognition of decisive actions that helped save the life of their bus driver.

On the afternoon of Oct. 7, Ann Tondreau, the driver of Lynnfield Public Schools Bus E, had a medical emergency during her afternoon run. 

After the second stop, a wasp concealed in her sweatshirt stung her multiple times, causing her to feel nauseous. Recognizing the severity of the situation, Tondreau pulled over and sought assistance from the students on the bus.

Several students promptly dialed 911 from their cellphones, alerting the Police and Fire departments. Both departments responded promptly, providing medical aid to the driver and safely reuniting the students with their parents.

The students’ quick thinking and their crucial role in ensuring the appropriate response to Tondreau’s medical emergency were acknowledged at an awards ceremony on Nov. 30.

“We are so proud of the actions taken by our middle-school students when they called 911 after their bus driver was stung by a wasp,” Superintendent Kristen Vogel told The Item. “They acted with responsibility and their actions represent those of good, caring citizens. They are so deserving of the recognition they received.”

State Fire Marshal Jon Davine presented the Young Hero Award to the students and emphasized the significance of their immediate and effective response.
