Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag rejected the chance to sign Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa over the summer.
The Red Devils parted ways with David de Gea after the expiry of his contract in July. They went on to replace him with Andre Onana.
Onana has produced a mixed bag of performances thus far and reports claim that he was not the priority target for the United board.
The club’s hierarchy were looking to sign World Cup winner Martinez from the Villains, but Ten Hag vetoed the club’s intentions.
The Dutchman was adamant on reuniting with his former Ajax goalkeeper Onana. A deal was eventually finalised for €50 million.
Onana had a wretched start to the campaign and he was guilty of several goalkeeping errors as well as poor distribution at the back.
He has improved over the past few weeks, but he needs to do much better, considering he was signed as a big upgrade on De Gea.
